Coxsackie is a town in Greene County, New York. The word “coxsackie” originates as a Native American term, understood to mean “owl's hoot". The name “coxsackie” is better known as the unfortunate virus. Dr. Gilbert Dalldorf, who discovered the virus, obtained one of the first specimens in Coxsackie and decided to name the virus after the town where this crucial discovery took place.
The town of Coxsackie is in the northeast portion of Greene County and has around nine thousand inhabitants. The Hudson River borders the town to the east. The New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) runs north-south through the Coxsackie. Other busy highways in the town are U.S. Route 9W and New York State Route 385.
